Course Objectives

The course aims to give practicing and potential managers and supervisors a foundation for their formal development. It seeks to build essential knowledge and skills required for effective performance in the supervisory role. The course also provides an opportunity for participants to develop a range of techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful supervision and performance management.

Course Content

The modules of this course includes the following contents:

• Introduction to supervision as an important role in management
• The Complementary between Leadership and management
• Leadership competences required of supervisors
• Leadership challenges facing supervisors
• Management essential for effective supervision (Know thyself, manage thyself, managing others).
• Performance management process and tools
• Post -performance assessment issues
• Workplace conflicts and the impact on performance
• Pro-active conflict resolution strategy
• Conflict prevention and resolution skills for supervisors.

Learning outcomes: At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Identify areas of improvement in their leadership and management styles in order to become more effective in their supervisory role.
• Demonstrate self-awareness, self-management and team work as they execute their roles and responsibilities
• Understand the performance management cycle and to effectively perform their role and responsibilities during the performance management process
• Develop skills of preventing, identifying and addressing conflicts at their workplaces.

Target Group

Action Aid staff, Senior and middle managers, Team leaders and newly appointed supervisors.
